Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche

The Most Venerable Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, lineage Master of both the Shangpa and Karma Kagyu, was born in western Tibet, in 1940 (Iron Dragon year) to a family of nomadic herders. When Rinpoche was four years old, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Bokar Tulku, Karma Sherab Osel and named Karma Shedrup Yongdu Pel Zangpo by HH 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.

Chronology of Bokar Monastery

1983    Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche visited the site for first time during a break in the Rinchen Terdzod empowerments

which Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche was bestowing in Sonada.

1984    The Land was acquired and construction began on Kalachakra retreat center, assembly hall and monks quarters

1988-9 Kalachakra stupa erected and consecrated

1992    Annual seminar for foreign students started

1996    Construction of the Karma Kagyu retreat centre completed and the first retreat commenced

1997    His Holiness the Dalai Lama visits Mirik for consecration and gives teachings in Karma Kagyu retreat center

2001    Construction on the new monastery complex begins

2003    Construction of the Shangpa Kagyu retreat center begins

2004    Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche passed away on August 17th.

2005    First Shangpa Kagyu three-year retreat begins in February

2006    Consecration of Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche’s Kudung Stupa overseen by His Holiness Karmapa
